In many places along the East Coast of Vancouver Island massive bodies of water are forced between narrow gaps of land and around islands, these narrow passes are famous for their currents
For many kayakers these places can be intimidating and looked on with fear, for others they are a playground where skills can be gained and refined.
Our current workshops are run over 2 or 3 days during which we will use both ebb and flood currents to practice and apply a full range of strokes for effective paddling and navigating in moving water. Skills include; ferry glides, S- turns, J- turns, entering and exiting current, rolling in current and rescue scenarios in dynamic water.
There will also be a theory presentation on tides and currents during which, participants will learn how to read and interrupt current tables in relation to safe paddling.
This workshop presents the intermediate paddler with an excellent opportunity to accelerate the learning process in a safe and controlled environment.
We run our current worships at Surge Narrows on Quadra Island. In our opinion Surge Narrows represents the best location on the Island where learning is available for all levels. To top that we stay at the wonderful and rustic Discovery Island Lodge where you can unwind in the fire heated sauna on the dock and enjoy a social gathering at the lodge.
To make it easy we include all main meals and three nights accommodation in the price.
A great choice of Kayak, safety gear and dry suit rental available upon request.

Skill Level Required
This workshop is best suited to intermediate paddlers looking to challenge their boat handling skills in dynamic water. You should certainly have a minimum Paddle Canada L1 skills or equivalent and ideally have either completed or considering taking the Paddle Canada L2 skills, we often run a L2 skills concurrently with this workshop (see website for details). The ability to preform a basic roll would be advantageous, however not essential, as we are happy to provide some rolling coaching for our guests. Above all come with an open mind to learn new skills, have fun and enjoy the challenge of Surge Narrows.
